Know a Reluctant Reader?

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

If you know a child who hasn’t yet discovered the joy of reading, do the words “Hank the Cowdog” bring a smile to your face? Guess you could say I have recently rediscovered these wonderful books written for ages 8 – 11, but enjoyed by everyone from 1 to 100. Author John Erickson is on his 56th or so book and each one is a joy to read. And isn’t it reassuring to know that there’s no worry about inappropriate content? Ruby Lane Books is now carrying Hank the Cowdog books, but our iventory is building slowly because many titles are available in limited quantities. I promise to keep looking if you’ll promise to remember good ‘ole Hank and his adventures when it comes time to stuff some little stockings this Christmas.

“Hamburger” Book Signing Fun and a Success for Author

Sunday, November 6th, 2011

I sold more copies of my book, The Texas Hamburger – History of a Lone Star Icon at Ruby Lane Books last week than at all the other book stores combined (only 6 so far, but only two months with the book)… Thanks for having me, Rosa – great shop in a wonderful town. – Author Rick Vanderpool

If you didn’t make it by the store for the signing & to meet Rick, we have signed copies still available. As well as Rick’s great “Hamburger” poster.

It’s NaNoWriMo time again!

Friday, October 28th, 2011

OK – who’s going to take the challenge? November is National Novel Writing Month and the challenge is to write a 50,000 novel in one month. (go to NaNoWriMo.org for specifics) One writer who has participated twice says, “It was unbelievably fun.” and “Being that productive gave me the shot of adrenaline I needed to write more.” I have also been told it is much more productive if you at least have a loose outline before Nov. 1. Then you simply follow the outline and write at least 1667 words every day in November.

This collaborative effort draws you into a community of writers. So…who’s with me on this? Email your name and a brief description of the novel you will write to info@rubylanebooks.com. We’ll become our own “village” and help each other stay on track. And when November 2011 is over, we’ll all have a novel! Think how good that will feel!

“The Texas Hamburger: History of a Lone Star Icon”

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

Author and photographer Rick Vanderpool will be signing copies of “The Texas Hamburger: History of a Lone Star Icon.” November 3, 1 – 3 p.m. in our store. One of the hamburger “joints” featured: Holly’s Drive In right here in Post! We’ll have light refreshments, but after you meet Mr. Vanderpool and hear all of his hamburger stories, you’ll probably head right on over to Holly’s for…what else…a burger!

Vanderpool traveled 11,000 miles, looking for the best hamburgers in Texas. He photographed roughly 750 joints and tasted several of the best of the best Texas burgers. Of course we’re not surprised that Holly’s was considered in this category and are happy that now folks will plan a stop in Post for a juicy, homemade burger.  “The Texas Hamburger” is a fun read and a great gift for folks who like to enjoy offbeat “tours” in Texas as well as anyone who enjoys the pop culture of the Lone Star State.  Great Christmas gift!

New Releases in Paperback

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

We have just received the wildly popular “The Help” in paperback as well as “Water for Elephants” with that yummy Robert Pattinson on the cover. (also paperback) That movie has just opened and you know the book is always better. Also have Tina Fey’s “Bossypants” in hardback – haven’t read the whole thing, but the excerpts are hilarious. Limited number of copies available so don’t wait!

New releases are something we’re now offering our customers. If you’ll let us know your favorite author(s) we can put in advance orders so you can pick up the latest read at Ruby Lane Books the day the book is released nationally…just like at those insanely large book places. We’re also happy to ship right to your doorstep if that’s best for you!

And, don’t forget that we are always very happy to special order for you – new and used books.

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

Come by the store Saturday, April 2, 1 to 3 p.m. and meet authors Eddie & Carol Walt.   Eddie has just published “The Hall Street Shoot-Out,” the true story of the Dallas Police Department’s biggest gun battle.  This is an account of an incident that took place when Eddie was a twenty-four year old patrolman in Dallas.  His wife, Carol has published several novels including “West Texas Classified” and “Aloha, Texas.”  Carol has also written a children’s book, “Cousins Camp” based on her own experiences with her grandchildren.

You will enjoy meeting these nice folks and learning more about their writing experiences on a ranch near Cross Plains, TX.

Great day at Ruby Lane!

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Many thanks to author Gary W. Moore who certainly went the extra (icey) mile to be in the book store today. And, many thanks to our great customers who helped make this event successful. Can’t forget to thank the Post Area Chamber of Commerce Manager, Janice Plummer, for playing Buddy Holly musc on Main Street today.

We still have copies of “Hey Buddy” – a few signed and dated by the author. Don’t forget Old Mill Trade Day Downtown this Saturday. There is a cash giveaway AND a special drawing for a 42″ TV.
