Read! Let’s make a pledge to read more in this new year. We won’t get into the e-book vs real book debate. We’ll simply read more, strive for diversity in our reading and if we do this, we will also have to turn off the TV, be more disciplined about the time we spend on Face Book and other computer-related activities and…read!
I’m reading Nora Efron’s book “I Hate My Neck” – Ephron is a fiction writer, director, producer – Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, When Harry Met Sally, etc. etc.] In her chapter about being “blind as a bat” and her dependence on reading glasses, I discovered a great paragraph about the benefits of reading: “Reading is one of the main things I do. Reading is everything. Reading makes me feel I’ve accomplished something, learned something, become a better person. Reading makes me smarter. Reading gives me something to talk about later on. Reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it’s a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up and reading is a way of making contact with someone else’s imagination after a day that’s all too real. Reading is grist. Reading is bliss!” So…let’s get started reading more TODAY! And, if you need something to read – come by the book store and let’s talk.
